Police deny Dr. JJ's allegations

Police vehemently denies the allegations made by senior United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena that police riot squads used poisonous tear gas to disperse the protestors who gathered opposite the Fort Railway station on Friday evening.

Dr. Jayawardena had complained of breathing problems as a result of tear gas shells being fired at them, the Police Media Spokesman, Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.

The spokesman said that police did not use poisonous tear gas to disperse protestors under any circumstances. The tear gas used on the protestors was imported to the country on a tender procedure by the Police Department from countries such as the United Kingdom and China.
