Price increases on bakery products stipulated

The Bakery Owners' Association (BOA) has focussed attention on Friday's price hike on bread by Rs. 5 and directed bakery owners countrywide to refrain from increasing the prices of other bakery products more than the stipulated prices between Rs. 2 - Rs. 3.

The BOA has called upon its members and other bakery owners to refrain from increasing the prices of wheat-related products drastically under the guise of the recent price hike on fuel and burden consumers further.

The Association's Secretary, Nimal Perera said that following the price hike on bread, other bakery products, such as buns and cakes would not go up more than the stipulated prices which the Association had announced on Thursday.

The BOA said that members of the Association would meet Trade Minister Johnston Fernando to work out a scheme to reduce taxes to check the prices of bread and other bakery products in the future. The BOA Secretary also focussed attention on the price increase of ingredients such as vegetable oil, margarine and yeast and said that this too contributed to the price increase of bakery products.
