Sixty-ball century by Skipper Wijetunga helps STC Matale beat Kegalle Vidyalaya by 8 wkts

CRICKET: A sixty-ball centry by skipper Shehan Wijetunga propelled St. Thomas' College, Matale to their seventh outright win for the season when they beat Kegalu Vidyalaya by eight wickets in their inter-school cricket match concluded at Matale on Friday.

Skipper Shehan Wijetunga was in a punishing mood in scoring 109 off 68 balls which had 8 sixes and 9 fours which meant that he had scored 84 of these runs with hits to the ropes or over it. He was associated in a third-wicket stand of 162 with Junior National Cricketer Lahiru Madushanka who playing the junior role, made 46 with 6 fours and 2 sixes.

Shan Chathuranga of Kegalu Vidyalaya who made 17 and 14 in the match, reached 900 runs for the season. He could have reached 1,000 runs had been more cautious especially in the second innings when he tried to force the pace and scored 2 sixes in his 14 runs when the approach should have been to build up an innnings and save the match.

Another batsman to excel for the Thomians was vice Captain Amuditha Wijewansa who scored 71 with 9 fours and 2 sixes made off 57 balls who has scored 750 runs for the season.

Kegalu Vidyalaya: 144 all out in 29.4 overs (Bimshendra Ranaweera 31, Tharaka Somatillake 12, Shan Chathuranga 17, Lahiru Perera 16, Thusitha Prematillake 32, Samadhi Dassanayake 20, Lahiru Madusanka 5 for 58, Ishara Kumarasiri 3 for 27) and 258 all out in 61.3 (Bimshendra Ranaweera 41, Tharaka Somatillake 62, Shan Chathuranga 14, Vimantha Ratnayake 78, Tharindu Somaratne 10, Krishan Narammala 20, Amudika Wijewansa 3 for 41, Nelson Kennedy 3 for 29, Thaveera Adikaranayake 2 for 48)

St. Thomas College: 323 for 9 declared in 42.2 overs (Nelson Kennedy 62, Shehan Wijetunga 109, Lahiru Madusanka 46, Amudika Wijewansa 71, Pandula Udupihila 27 not out, Chathuranga Prematilleke 2 for 54, Bimshendra Ranaweera 5 for 107) and 83 for 2 in 15.1 overs (Nelson Kennedy 33, Shashika Tillekaratne 15, Shehan Wijetunga 22 not out, Bimshendra Ranaweera 2 for 20).
