LTTE killed Rajiv Gandhi 21 years ago
The 21st death anniversary of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv
Gandhi falls tomorrow. LTTE terrorists used a human bomb on May 21, 1991
to assassinate him in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
The Tigers used Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, also known as Dhanu, for the
suicide attack at a political rally, killing Gandhi and 14 others.
The 46-year-old Indian leader was campaigning for the Congress Party
when a powerful bomb, hidden in a basket of flowers, exploded killing
him instantaneously.
Gandhi’s death shocked the world and marked the end of the Nehru
dynasty that had led India for all but five years since independence
from Britain. He became Prime Minister in 1984.
