Sharp increase in export earnings

Export earnings had increased by 22.76 percent in 2011 compared to the previous year, said Sri Lanka Export Development Board (SLEDB) chairman Janaka Ratnayaka. He said there was a sharp increase in export earnings from coconut and related products, spices and essential oils, diamonds, gems, jewellery, garments and finished rubber products.

Last year’s total export earnings were US$ 10,913. “We have set a target of US$ 15 billion for exports under the 2011-2015 strategic plan. This will be achieved by improving small-scale enterprises and extending support to large scale ventures”, he said.

The SLEDB strives to increase the country’s exportable goods and services through diversification including new products while consolidating products and services, the chairman said.
