An unconscious sensing of the future
Cosmic evolution may teach us how the good and evil tendencies of man
may have come about; but, in itself, it is incompetent to furnish any
better reason why what we call good is preferable to what we call evil
than we had before. Some day, I doubt not, we shall arrive at an
understanding of the evolution of the aesthetic faculty; but all the
understanding in the world will neither increase nor diminish the force
of the intuition that this is beautiful and that is ugly.
~ Thomas Henry Huxley, in 'Evolution and Ethics'
Intuition is something all humans possess. It provides us with - a
quick sensing of the truth without conscious attention or reasoning;
instinctive knowledge or feeling; presentiment; an immediate knowledge,
or envisagement, of an object, truth, or principle, whether of a
physical, rational, artistic, or ethical nature.
When our mind perceives something without the intervention of any
process of thought; or when we discover a truth, or reach a just
conclusion, without resort to the powers of reason; we are being
intuitive. In fact, in most humans, all ethical principles - knowledge
of right and wrong - are instinctive.
Man has an intuitive apprehension and intrinsically valid judgement
of moral values. This is what distinguishes, and elevates, man from the
rest of the life forms. Though there be other traits as well, none as
valuable as this, none as exalted as this: intuitivism - the connection,
the alliance and attachment, between man and the cosmic intelligence.
That, more often than not, man chooses not to follow his instincts
where true wisdom manifests itself, and instead elects to live at the
level of animals, or even lower in some case, is of his own making.
An unconscious sensing of the future; a prophetic sense of something
to come; presentiment or a foreboding; is also an intuition, an
intuitive feeling. How often have we had that feeling, a heaviness of
the heart, a kind of constriction, which seems to warn us that something
ill is in the making, is about to happen; and true enough, something
unexpectedly bad, occurs soon thereafter. Sometimes we feel elated, for
no apparent or conceivable reason, only to come home and discover the
reason for it.
Many a time, the power of intuitive understanding has protected us
from harm, and be assured that it will continue to do so until the end
of our life. In fact, built into us is an internal guidance system that
shows us the path less perilous.
All we need to do is heed the inner voice. Believe in the intuition
and the intuitive inspiration. These activate insight and inspiration
that brings on intuitive imagination.
This is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited, whereas
imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving
birth to evolution. Strictly speaking, these are - insight and
inspiration - the only real factor in our life.
"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a
faithful servant. We have created a society that honours the servant and
has forgotten the gift." said Albert Einstein. The intellect has little
to do on the road to discovery.
Most times, when we are troubled over something and do not have an
answer to overcome it, there comes a leap in consciousness, call it
intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you and you do not
know why or how. Systems die; instincts remain.
The more and more we are impelled and motivated by that which is
intuitive; or rely upon the soul force within, the greater, the farther,
the deeper, the broader, the more constructive, may be the result. It is
said that notion without intuition, is empty; intuition without notion,
is blind.
Our time on planet earth, the allotted span for each of us, is
limited. Do not waste it living someone else's dream. Avoid the trap of
dogma, which is akin to living the result of other peoples thinking. Do
not let the noise of other's opinion drown your inner voice. Allow
intuition to lead your path. It will tell you when you are right, even
if you do not know the reason as to why you are right. Cease trying to
work everything out with your mind.
It will get you nowhere. Live by intuition and inspiration and let
your whole life be Revelation. Hence, heed your inner voice, and you
shall not fault. Everything else is secondary.
All great men have the gift of intuition. They know without reasoning
or analysis, what they need to know. They follow it, and it leads them
to greatness. Intuition and concepts constitute the elements of all our
knowledge. Neither concepts without an intuition in some way
corresponding to them, nor intuition without concepts, can yield
knowledge. Intuition is the ability to acquire knowledge without
inference or the use of reason.
See you this day next week. Until then, keep thinking; keep laughing.
Life is mostly about these two activities.
