Sri Lanka at World Marathon Museum
by Nilma DOLE
Plans are under way to set up a special area for Sri Lanka at the
world's first museum dedicated to marathons.
The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS)
Marathon Museum of Running will host a Sri Lankan display which will
feature all legendary marathon runners of the island including the
versatile runner who will compete in the London 2012 Olympics, Anuradha
Indrajith Cooray.
Former windsurfing champion turned marathon runner, Thilak
Weerasinghe represents Sri Lanka at the AIMS. He also heads his own
successful tour company, LSR (Lanka Sports Reizen) which hosts the
popular Colombo Marathon and the foreign marathon known as the LSR
International Marathon.
"The accredited council for world marathon runners is AIMS which set
the standards for marathon running around the world.
Sri Lanka became a member of the Association only recently and this
year, we are happy to enjoy voting rights so that we have a say in how
marathons and marathon championships are held around the world," he
said.
