President to open sports complex today

The newly constructed `Nawalapitiya Jayathillake Sports Complex’ will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the invitation of Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, today at 3.00 p.m.

The new sports complex which is constructed at a cost of Rs. 250 million is the first-ever fully equipped sports complex opened in the Central Province, under the `Regional Sports Facilities and Complexes Development Program’ launched by the Ministry of Sports.

A senior Ministry official said 25 various events could be staged in the complex and the turf has been constructed accordingly.

Sports Minister Mahindananda Alluthgamage told the Sunday Observer that the Government’s prime objective is to develop sports in the country and take the local sportsmen and sportswomen to the international arena.

He said the Government has allocated Rs. 4500 million to construct 314 sports grounds in all Divisional Secretariats, 25 large scale District level sports complexes and nine sports stadia in all provinces under the program.

Minister Aluthgamage also said that his Ministry has taken steps to develop sports in villages and encourage sportsmen and sports women to take part in various games.
