Minor irrigation projects repaired in NCP
Under the Gama Neguma program conducted through the Economic
Development Ministry, more than 870 minor irrigation projects have been
renovated in the North Central Province.
While developing major tanks and reservoirs in the province,
upgrading minor irrigation systems is given prominence in the Government
development plan as irrigation holds a prime position in developing
agriculture of the area.
In addition to these projects, the Government has launched a massive
project to renovate the dams of major irrigation tanks in the
Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts. All high risk dams in the
Kalawewa, Huruluwewa, Tisawewa, Nachchaduwa and Nuwarawewa in the
Anuradhapura district are being renovated under this plan. Parakrama
Samudra and Minneriya tanks are also being renovated under this project.
The renovation project includes clearing and uprooting of secondary
growth jungle along the downstream and removing of dead trees which pose
a risk.
