PC candidates asked to campaign peacefully

The Elections Department has asked the candidates contesting the Sabaragamuwa, Eastern and North Central Provincial Council elections to engage in propaganda campaigns peacefully, according to Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya.

He said the propaganda activities will conclude on midnight Wednesday.

The Commissioner has asked the candidates to refrain from hurting or promoting a particular candidate at a time when propaganda activities have hottened up. He also asked parties to refrain from calling protests, organising marches, vehicle parades and orchestras and conducting rallies without permission and violating the law.

Stringent legal action will be taken against those involved in such activities. Meanwhile, pasting posters, campaigning, holding roadside exhibitions, walks, vehicle parades and rallies have been banned on September 6,7 and 8, the Commissioner said.
