Over 300 power pirates nabbed

The flying squad of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) nabbed 334 electricity pirates last month and fined them Rs. 20.3 million. Rs. 3.8 million was imposed as court charges and Rs. 16.5 million as the loss to the CEB, a spokesman for the Power and Energy Ministry said.Accordingly, 177 persons were accused of tampering with their electricity meters while 157 persons were charged of using hooks.

The spokesman said that the CEB experiences huge losses every year due to electricity pirates.

The Ministry has sought the assistance of the public to nab electricity pirates.

Information about electricity pirates can be provided over the hotline 2422259 to the CEB Investigative Division.

The Ministry said in addition to the fines and Court charges, electricity connections of pirates will permanently be disconnected.
