Five islands to receive solar and wind power

The Ministry of Power and Energy will provide solar and wind power to the Delft, Nainathivu, Nagadeepa, Analathivu and Elivathivu islands from January next year.

Initial work on these power projects has already commenced and will be completed by the end of next year. The power supply will benefit over 3,500 families in these islands.

Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranwaka told the Sunday Observer that although the residents in these islands are provided with thermal power, it would be better for them to get solar and wind power to overcome any power shortage.

At present only 22 percent, 28 percent, 45 percent and 55 percent families in Delft, Analativu, Elavativu and the Nagadeepa islands receive thermal power and with the solar and wind power they could be provided electrically.
