All island schools athletic meet:

Fernando, Senanayake the best

A.D.A. Fernando of Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa and S.R.J.P. Senanayake were adjudged the best male and female athletes at the 2012 All Island Schools Athletic meet while the Western Province won the championship with 874 points and Central Province were runners up with 612 points. Sabaragamuwa were third with 577 points.

Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa and Maris Stella College, Negombo were the joint boys champions with 117 points each while A. Rathnayake Central College Walala took third spot with 90 points. St Joseph’ Balika Vidyalaya Kegalle and A. Rathnayaka Central College Walala were joint women’s champions with 167 points each with Sumana Balika Vidyalaya coming in third with 161 points.

Athletes from St. Josephs’ Girls College Kurunegala were responsible for the only two records to fall on the final day of the 2012 All Island Schools Athletics Championship which concluded today.

S.R.J.P. Senanayake of St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya won the 100 meter dash for girls under 21 in a record time of 12.30 seconds to erase the 12.31 second mark set by schoolmate J.A.N. Shashipraba Jayasingha in 2009. Not to be out done the 4 x 100 relay quartet of St Josephs’ Balika Kegalle bettered their All island schools record clocking 4:12.01 minutes. The previous mark stood at 4:16.77 minutes.

In the first event of the day W.W.M. Tharindu Madushan of Lunuwatta Central College won the 21.098 Kilometer half marathon for boys under 19 with a time of one hour 13 minutes and 53 seconds at the All Island Schools Athletic meet yesterday. Tharindu led from the start at the 184 kilometer post near Nakulugamuwa on the Colombo – Tangalla Road. This was Tharindu’s second gold of the meet. He established a new record in the 5000 meters on the second day of the meet.

D.M. Maheshika Madushani of Polpithigama National School won the half marathon for girls under 19 with a time of one hour twenty seven minutes and fifty five seconds. She won the 1500 meter event yesterday. Milina Kumari Senevirathna of Sri Rahula NS holds the record for the event with a time of 1 hr 21 mts and 18 secs established last year.

Half Marathon Under-19 Girls:

1. D.M. Maheshika Madshani, (Polpithigama National School North Western) 1:27:55.0, 2. U.G.L.J. Ranasingha Rivisanda (Central College Ussapitiya Sabaragamuwa) 1:32:04.0, 3. R.D.
