Drawing animals -fox

[Part 3]

On most sunny mornings a fox or two can be seen basking on a shed roof or ground, in countries where there are many foxes.. They like the sun and will curl up for long hours to sleep in its warmth.

Look at figure 1 to see how the basic outline of a sleeping fox is drawn.. The secret is to observe carefully and then quickly jot down the basic shape in the outline. Later you can take your time adding details no matter if the fox moves. Figure. 1 shows the sleeping position, observe how his legs and head have been drawn.Remember the curve of the body, muscle and the tail. The sketch in figure 2 shows a complete sketch. Lots of dots and dashes are shown and this is the common view of drawing a still fox.

I have indicated in thick dotted lines dark shades the fur markings.

Study the way I have used fine lines and dashes and dots to give different tones. At first you may do a pencil drawing with a (HB) pencil and then a soft one (4B) to give middle tones and deep shades. The most common mistake beginners make drawing the fox's nose and ears too big and triangular in shape which is not correct. They are petal like in structure with curved ends. Copy the example in pencil, then ink it and practise many times to gain perfection.
