Thalassaemia medication: expert advice sought

The Ministry of Health has decided to seek the advice of medical experts in connection with two medicines administered to Thalassaemia patients, a Ministry spokesman said.

He said the Health Ministry has taken this decision on the basis of media reports on 'Desferal' and 'Talifer' given to Thalassaemia patients.Certain media had reported that 'Talifer' causes side effects in patients which is not so with 'Desferal'. These two medicines are given free to Thalassaemia patients by the Health Ministry.

He said these medicines should be given to patients on the recommendation of medical experts after thorough checks. Meanwhile, some medical experts have said that there are no side affects with 'Talifer'
