YMBA donations to Cancer Hospital
The YMBA Dehiwela-Mount Lavinia makes substantial donations annually
in cash and kind to the Maharagama Cancer Hospital.
This year too the YMBA will hold the event on Sunday, November 4 from
9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital and Cancer
Home.
Medical officers perturbed

Medical officers of the Central Province have expressed their
disillusionment over the dictatorial behaviour of the Director of Health
Services in the Central Province. They say the director handles the
affairs high-handedly.
If the situation continues to remain, the medical officers of the CP
would resort to trade union actions to have their rights won.
IESL award for Navy's Thalassaemia invention
The Thalassaemia Drug Infusion System invented by the Sri Lanka Navy
has won the Engineering Excellence Award - 2012. The award was presented
by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), for its manufacturing
excellence.
The award was received by Director General Training of the Sri Lanka
Navy, Rear Admiral M.U.K.B. Bandara at the IESL’s 106th Annual Sessions
which were held at the BMICH on Friday. The new drug infusion system for
Thalassemia patients is important for the removal of excess iron
deposits gathered in vital organs of patients as a result of frequent
blood transfusions needed for the treatment of the disease.
The award winning drug infusion system was developed by the Research
and Development Unit of the Sri Lanka Navy. It has brought about a great
deal of relief to many patients who cannot afford the expensive system.
The equipment has been manufactured at a relatively low unit cost of
approximately Rs. 4,500, whereas imported equipment of its kind that
cost over Rs. 50,000 for a unit.
A spokesman for the Navy said the Navy would continue such efforts
which benefit the civilian society as well.
COSLAM lecture
The Conference of Sri Lankan Malays [COSLAM] and the trustees of
Wekanda Jumma Masjid will be held its monthly Islamic lecture series 'In
the Shade of the Holy Qur'an' today at the Wekanda Jumma Masjid from
10.30 a.m. upto Luhar prayers.

Stars in Harmony
The Old Boys' Association of Mahinda College presents 'Stars in
Harmony 2012' with 'Lankika and the Golden Chimes' at the Kularatne
Hall, Ananda College, Colombo 10 on November 3 at 6.30 p.m.
Proceeds are Towards the School Development Fund.
Annesley Malawana, Anil Bhareti, Mariazelle Gunatilleke, Ronnie

Kidney patient needs help
Suresh Gayan Mendis (35) of katubedda, Moratuwa, a father of two
girls, has been diagnosed with End Stage kidney failure. Consultant
Nephrologist Dr. M. Nazar has advised urgent transplant.
A good Samaritan has agreed to donate a kidney, but Suresh, an Office
Assistant at the Sri Jayawardenepura University is in need of funds to
meet expenses connected with the surgery.

Hearing impairment: appeal for help
Two-year-old baby Senehas Randilu, son of P.V. Janitha Sampath de
Alwis of "Samaragiri", Mathugama, Polgampola is suffering from hearing
impairment from birth. Consultant ENT Surgeon Dr. A.D.K.S.N. Yasawardana
of the Ridgeway Hospital, Colombo has recommended a cochlear implant
surgery.
The cost of the imported implant model is around Rupees 32 lakhs and
the parents who are of poor income group appeal for assistance for this
worthy cause. |
