The Customs officers attached to the Bandaranaike International Airport arrested a Kuwaiti national (75) while attempting to smuggle out a haul of foreign currency worth Rs. 2.5 million, yesterday morning. The currency included 7,000 Swiss Franks, 8,500 Euro and 500 dirams. IRCs and pickpockets nabbed in shopping malls

Several plainclothes police women along with their male counterparts have been detailed in shopping areas such as Pettah, Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya and Wellawate to keep an eye on pickpockets where large numbers of shoppers congregate. “From the day the operation commenced we have arrested around 20-30 persons against whom warrants have been issued by various courts.

More Lankan peace-keepers for Haiti

The next contingent of Sri Lankan troops for the United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in Haiti will leave the island during the first week of January 2013. According to military sources, this is the 15th Lankan Forces contingent to be sent to Haiti and comprises Army, Navy and Air Force personnel.

Group attempting to revive LTTE nabbed

The Tamil Nadu Police ‘Q’ Branch sleuths have arrested a key LTTE operative and electronics expert and three men he had recruited in a plan to revive the Tiger terrorist organisation. The arrests have been made on a tip-off given by the Sri Lankan army which recently apprehended two Sri Lankan Tamils on the suspicion of attempting to rebuild the tiger terrorist organisation.

Husband held over gruesome triple killing

The gruesome killing of a mother and two of her young children has sent shockwaves among law-abiding citizens. The charred bodies of the young mother along with her three-year-old son and a month-old infant who lived in an upstair house at Kaldemulla in the Mount Lavinia area was found in their room when police visited the scene.
