Girls’ High School, Kandy sports meet:Langdon House champions

Langdon House became champions at the 134th Inter-House Track and
Field Meet of Girls High School, Kandy, held at the Bogambara Stadium,
Kandy on Wednesday.
Langdon House accumulating 634 points had a clear lead of 154 points
over the second placed Sansom House who had 480 points.
Occupying the third place was Eaton House with 448 points. Finishing
fourth was Lawrence House with 430 points.
The best performers in the respective age groups were:
Under-11: Piyumi Wickremasinghe (Sansom House)
Under-13: Chavindu Bandara (Eaton House)
Under-15: Pathali Palanagoda (Lawrence House)
Under-17: Chandani Dissanayake (Eaton House)
Under-19: Krithiha Ratneswaran (Lawrence House)
The chief guest and Director of Sports and Physical Education of the
Department of Education B.A. Abeyratne speaking on the occasion said
that the Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage and the Minister
of Education, Bandula Gunawardena are doing their best to encourage
sports among schoolchildren and not restrict activities of
schoolchildren only to classrooms.
Sports and studies should go together.He said that the Mahinda
Chinthana gives a prominent place to sports and sports should start at
schools level and it is here that the foundation is laid. Schools serve
as a nursery for national teams.
Talent and skills are identified at this stage. Therefore the
importance of participation in sports at school level is essential.
He said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa takes a keen interest in
sports and has come forward to help sportsmen and women.
He has constructed several playgrounds including international stadia
to host national and international events.
