Essay competition – March/April 2013
An essay competition for school-children between 12-18 years of age
will be conducted by the American Centre Library, US Embassy, Colombo to
mark the Women’s History Month. First, second and third place awards
will be given in the following age categories.
12-15 years and 16-18 years
Please send your essays along with your Name, Age Category, Contact

The panel of judges will assess all entries and then select first,
second and third place essays under each age category. All three winners
will receive a collection of American literature, a life time membership
to the American Centre Library and a signed certificate. Winners will be
invited to attend an award ceremony at the American Centre in Colombo.
Please note: The essay competition is restricted to Sri Lankan
students.
Closing date for submission of essays is May 15, 2013.
Age 12-15 years (minimum 500 words)
What lessons can today’s women learn from Rosa Parks, who is known as
the “Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement”?
Age 16-18 years (minimum 1,000 words)
It is well-known that Hillary Rodham Clinton was inspired to work in
some form of public service after hearing a speech in Chicago by the
Reverend Martin Luther King in 1968. Why do you see her as a good
example of present day women who has charisma and political leadership?
