Waterfalls in Sri
Lanka
We continue the series on waterfalls. There are 313 waterfalls in Sri
Lanka. Most of them are found upcountry. The cascading waters of these
falls are a sight to behold.
Dambora falls – Colombo district
The fall is 10 metres in height and is created by a waterway of the
Wakoya River and was formerly known as Demala Falls as the Tamil
(Dravidian/Demala) labourers used to wash themselves here.
Dambora Falls is located near the Labugama Reservoir in the village
of Dambora in the Hanwella Divisional Secretariat, in the Colombo
district.
Ella Uda Falls – Colombo district
The Ella Uda Falls takes its water from the Kodikande Mountain and
the Koswatte canal network, which flows through rock and tree-lined
valleys, before cascading from a cliff at the point of the fall. A
species of fish, known locally as mahseer (Tor khudree), thrives here.
A good view of the Colombo district's highest mountain is possible
from the fall.
The Ella Uda Falls is in the Colombo district in the Avissawella
electorate in Hanwella.
To reach it, take the Hanwella road and turn off near the Thummodara
Old Bridge, then continue for a further 10 km to the Illuovita area. |
