by Dhaneshi Yatawara
The Government hopes to provide electricity to all rural households
by the end of 2014, according to Power and Energy Minister Pavithra
Wanniarachchi.
"Most households in rural areas have not benefited by the rural
electrification projects launched by the government", Minister
Wanniarachchi said.
Six new electricity power supply projects were commissioned this
weekend in the Kalawana electorate under the Lighting Sri Lanka program
of the Ministry of Power and Energy. These projects estimated to cost
approximately Rs. 34.7 million provide electricity for more than 250
families.
On a directive by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, electricity will be
provided to the rural communities to whom electricity was never provided
due to various reasons over these years, Minister Wanniarachchi said.
The Ministry of Power and Energy provides electricity even to a few
families living in areas which cannot be easily accessed. The Government
has attached great importance to rural electrification to achieve its
100 percent goal. Many rural electrification schemes had been completed
in 2010 having supplied electricity to 85 percent of the total
households.
