Police warn drunken drivers

A 5,000-strong police force has been deployed countrywide to nab drunken drivers during the festive season and control traffic.

Director, Traffic Administration and Road Safety of the Traffic Police Headquarters SSP R A D C Ranasinghe told the Sunday Observer that 5,000 traffic policemen will be deployed in every police area to maintain road safety during the Avurudu season.

He said motorists don’t think twice at the wheel under the influence of liquor during the festive season and this might cause accidents eventually.

Statistics have shown that many accidents had occurred during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holidays due to drunken driving and speeding. The SSP called upon the public to be extra careful while driving.

The Traffic Police Headquarters has ordered all police divisions to submit a report by Tuesday on the number of accidents during the weekend.
