Germany helps landmine victims

The German Government has granted Rs18 million to support victims of landmines in the North. The project will be implemented by the Johanniter International Assistance Organisation and consists of several components including the purchase of 75 wheelchairs and material for 185 prostheses which will benefit 260 victimss.

The beneficiaries will receive practical training in operating their wheelchairs and psycho-social support to cope with their mental and physical injuries. German Ambassador Dr. Morhard said he hoped that this project would make a meaningful contribution to the victims of landmines and help them to re-integrate into mainstream society and become economically independent.

“These victims’ lives have been turned upside down by their devastating experiences and their wounds will never completely heal, but I trust that this project will help them to lead successful lives,” he said.
