A new book on cinema

Prof. Wimal Dissanayake's latest book on cinema was published in London this week by the well-known publishing house, Routledge.

It is in the prestigious Routledge Handbook series and is titled, 'Routledge Handbook of Indian Cinemas.' It consists of 25 chapters and runs to nearly 500 pages. Prof. Moti Gokulsing of the University of East London and Prof. Wimal Dissanayake of the University of Hawaii have jointly edited it.

It is an honour for a Sri Lankan scholar to have been invited to co-edit the prestigious volume. Prof. Dissanayake is regarded as a leading authority on Asian cinema.


What I Saw What I Heard

Rajithangani Unantenna Fernando's book titled What I Saw What I Heard was launched as a Stamford Lake publication recently. It is a collection of stories about places and people. The book provides a different drum-beat for anyone who wants to read something different.

The author writes about model soldiers, ordinary people such as cobblers, caves that reveal romantic episodes, the Baobab tree in Mannar, miracles at the shrine of St. Padre Pio, Dedimunda Devale, Kataragama, Sri Pada and places of natural beauty. Pictures and illustrations have enhanced the value of the book.

The Big Grudge!

Dinesh Shikanthan de Silva's latest book titled The Big Grudge! was launched as a Dreamwill publication recently. It is the first book of The Yardley Boys series.

The Yardley Boys who attend Slumberton International School are a dynamic new generation of students always up to mischief. They are in the habit of repenting at the Goodwill Goodluck Church where a good-natured priest gives them sensible but sometimes hilarious advice.

One day the Yardley Boys come across a fortune cookie with a baffling riddle. They use their unusual talent to uncover some sinister goings-on in Slumberton. The big bad bully Boris Ponting and fabulously rich Ella Pompus are so jealous that they gang up to thwart the Yardley Boys.

The mysterious Stangler who has a big grudge against the Yardley Boys unleashes a diabolical plan to take revenge from Mr Strangler.

The Big Grudge! is a thrilling adolescent novel.

Anathuruvalin Obe Daruva Rekaganna

Vidyajothi Consultant Surgeon Vijaya Godakumbura's latest book titled Anathuruvalin Obe Daruva Rekaganna (Protect your child from injury) was launched as a Sarasavi publication recently.

It is a topical publication because about 950,000 children under the age of 18 in the world die due to injury and violence each year. In the South East Asian region alone, road traffic injuries, drowning, burns and self-inflicted injuries are the leading causes of death among children.

The author has won several global awards for his work in the prevention of injuries to children.


Mee Master

Bhadra Indrani Amarakoon's latest Sinhala adolescent novel titled Mee Master was launched recently as a Sarasavi publicaation. Amarakoon has published several other novels such as Ikbithi E Malikavo, Olivia, Volbiyof Saha Yapane Kondakari, Palangetiyo Evith and Rambo.


Apema Amma

Award-winning author Gunaratne Ekanayake's latest Sinhala novel titled Apema Amma was launched as a Nipun Publication recently.
