England clinch the issue

Flashback: England beat Pakistan by three wickets in the Third Test at Headingley in the 1982 series. Pakistan batting first made 275 and in their second innings made 199, while England made 256 in their first turn and reached their victory target of 219 for 7 wickets in their second innings.

The result which gave England the series by two matches to one, would have come as a bitter blow to Pakistan who were so close to beating England in a Test series for the first time.

But it was Pakistan who called the tune on the first day of the match and it was Mudassar Nazar (65) and Javed Miandad (54) who saw to it that Pakistan would take the lead. After two early wickets fell for 19 runs, this pair put on 100 runs for the third wicket and steadied the innings and Pakistan ended the first day 255 for 8 wickets. Javed Miandad batted for four hours for 54 runs and Mudassar Nazar for 2 and three-quarters of an hour for 65 and both batsman played easily their most convincing innings of three-match series.

A second day's play which was even more absorbing than the first and which every run was hand earned, ended with honours almost even Pakistan finally made 275 in their first innings with Imran Khan left high and dry on 67 not out and at close on the second day, England replied with 256. Gatting and Tavare added 52 for the second wicket before Imran Khan dismissed Gatting, Lamb and Tavare in the space of 9 balls.

Then Botham (57) and David Gower (74) were involved in fruitful partnership of 69 in 59 minutes for the firth wicket. So. England were all out for 256 runs in their first innings in reply to Pakistan's 275. So, Pakistan had a slender lead of 19 runs on the first innings.

Innings number two started and it was Imran Khan (46) and Javed Miandad (52) who did the bulk of the scoring while there was useful 39 by Mansoor Akhtar and Pakistan folded up for 199 in their second innings.

So, Pakistan finally had a total of 474 runs in the first and second innings while England had a total of 256 runs in their first innings which left England to make 218 runs for a win in this match

England made a fine start with openers C.J. Tavare (33) and G. Fowler (86) being involved in a opening partnership of 103 runs and that gave the go ahead for the England team to win the match. England finally made 219 runs 7 wickets and they won match by three wickets.
