Customs nabs illegally imported ACs, fridges

An illegally imported consignment of air-conditioners and refrigerators was seized last week by Sri Lanka Customs which launched an investigation to apprehend the racketeers.

The consignment comprised 75 air-conditioners and 15 refrigerators and had been fraudulently declared as electric fans to avoid the payment of taxes. Air-conditioners and refrigerators are considered as luxury items and are subjected to heavier taxes in the island.

It is believed that the Government would have lost around Rs. 10 million in tax revenues due to the racket.
