Lakshan Fernando – best athlete at KDU meet
The annual sports meet of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence (KDU)
University was held on April 26 and 27, 2013 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa
International Stadium at Diyagama. Brigadier A.L.D.M. Gunasekara, RSP
USP – Deputy Vice-Chancellor, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Undergraduate cadet officer Lakshan Fernando was awarded the best
athlete of the year for his best performance in field events.
He created the Javelin throw record which is the only record
performed in men’s events at this meet.
Lakshan Fernando was an outstanding sportsman produced by St.Joseph’s
College, Colombo in recent past. He was awarded the ‘Josephian Blue’ and
Sportsman of the Year 2009.
Lakshan was selected to represent the country in athletics as a
schoolboy and was awarded the Sri Lanka Colours for athletics. As a
schoolboy, he won the first places in Shot Putt, Discuss and Javelin
throw events. He was awarded Sri Lanka Schools Colours for those events
for many years.
Major General Milinda Peiris, RWP, RSP, USP ndc psc, Vice Chancellor
who is providing all facilities and the fullest support to undergraduate
Sportsmen of the University to improve and to achieve high standard in
sports.
Lakshan Fernando’s coach Dilruk Nilantha is behind his achievements
in athletics from his school days and presently he is his coach at the
University.
Lakshan’s father Roshan Fernando (DIG) Badulla and Moneragala
Districts, was an outstanding old Royalist who captained Royal College
athletics in 1979 was and a superb athlete during his days.
