Hotels called upon to implement proper waste disposal mechanism

Environment Protection Certificates issued to hotels will be cancelled immediately, if they are found to be disposing their refuse in a manner which harms the environment, Environment and Renewable Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

The waste disposal system of hotels close to beaches will be monitored closely by the authorities. This would be done to prevent the sea from being polluted by the refuse from hotels, the Minister said.

A mechanism to safely dispose the refuse from such hotels has been made compulsory.

Hotels which fail to implement such a mechanism will have their Environmental Protection Certificate cancelled, he said.

Minister Premajayantha, who met members of the Sri Lanka Business Forum, has asked for their cooperation to successfully implement this program. He expressed confidence that environmental pollution could be reduced to a considerable level if such refuse was handled properly in Government and private institutions and at homes.
