Garbage bins soon to separate solid waste

The Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils will create a new culture in solid waste management by distributing garbage bins to households through the local government authorities to encourage people to separate garbage at their residences.

Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry Secretary R.A.A.K. Ranawake told the Sunday Observer that the Ministry hopes to implement this project from next month with a Rs. 25 million allocation from the Ministry to launch the program with the help of Provincial Councils. “We will create a revolving fund for this purpose to purchase more garbage bins to be issued at household level and extend the program to cover almost all local authority areas in the country”, the Secretary said.

Ranawake said that two bins will be provided to each household under the project. The cost of the bins will be recovered from families who are better off. The bins will be provided to the low income groups at a 50 percent subsidised rate. The bins will be given to the differently-abled and the poorest section of people free.
