Sixty hostels for university students
The Cabinet has granted approval to the proposal of the Government to
construct 60 hostels on an expedited basis to boost accommodation
facilities for students entering universities in the country. Sri Lanka
has 17 universities including two Buddhist universities. These
universities provide tertiary education to over 92,000 students.Higher
Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake, who had considered the need to
provide hostel facilities to a large number of students had proposed the
construction of 60 dormitory buildings conforming to modern technology
for all 17 universities.
Each building will comprise four storeys and would have 100 rooms
which would provide accommodation facilities to 200 students.
Over 12,000 students will find accommodation once the construction of
the 60 buildings is completed. The project, which is expected to be
carried out in two stages, will see completion in two years. |
