The value of newspapers
We know what a newspaper is. It has many advantages. It is very
useful in the modern world. Newspapers play an important role in our
life. Some prefer to be without breakfast rather than miss the morning
newspaper.
The word “NEWS” stands for North, East, West and South which gathers
news from all four directions. Newspapers also publish marriage
proposals, obituary notices, job vacancies and feature articles on
various subjects.
They provide us with information of national interest, foreign,
financial and sports news too. The newspaper brings us all these
information for a low price.
Today we live in a global village. No nation or country can isolate
themselves from the rest of the world. What happens in other countries
affect our country. Newspapers help us to understand what is going on in
different parts of the world.
In the field of education and art one can gain a vast knowledge by
reading articles in newspapers. The reader can enjoy various literary
creations that appear in them.
The Students too can learn much about various subjects from newspaper
articles. Therefore, the newspaper is a source of knowledge and
entertainment.

My pet cat
I got a pet cat a few years ago. He seems to think that he is in
charge of me.
He acts in strange ways.
Sometimes I wonder whether he is really a pet. I think he is also
confused at times.
He does things which surprise me. He seems to think that elastic bands
are creatures!
He also seems to think that he is well-balanced. He never says, “Miaow”.
I have no idea what he thinks about me. My pet cat is so cute that I
like him a lot.

Tourism in Sri Lanka
The
well-known explorer Marco Polo of the 12th century wrote that Sri Lanka
is one of the finest islands. However, the 30 year long terrorism had a
negative impact on tourism and the growth of the industry got stagnated.
After the end of terrorism in 2009 the country’s tourism prospects
looked promising.
In 2010 immediately after the end of terrorism, Sri Lanka had a
growth of 46 percent in tourist arrivals. From 2009 to 2011 it got
doubled with the number of arrivals reaching upto 855,975. In 2012 Sri
Lanka was named as the best tourist destination.
The advantages of tourist destination are three fold. First, it is an
authentic destination. Second, it is a compact island of 65,610 sqkm.
where tourists can travel within a few days and the third is the
diversity of the unparallel tourist product.
There are many beaches, heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries and
places of scenic beauty. The people in our country do not know how to
get the maximum benefit out of tourism. The Government should take
action against those who pollute the environment.

The importance of sports
Sports and exercise play an important role in our life as they help
us to remain fit and live longer. They shape and tone our muscles and
minimise the muscular sprains.
Sports mean fitness and good health for the people. But now people do
not have the time for sports because they are busy with their
lifestyles.
Imagine a car which has not worked for years. If you try to start the
engine, it will not work since it has been rusted and may be broken
down.
People are just like an engine. If we do not do sports we will be
forced to rust.
In other words, our body will be weak. We may have problems with our
body when we want to walk. In addition sports balance our body’s blood
pressure and circulation. Sports teach us how to face defeat with grace
and to achieve greater things in life. Pain is temporary but victory is
forever.
When something is improving your health makes you physically fit and
earn you respect among the people.
So if you have not ventured into a world of sports, do not while away
your time in doubt. Take part in sports, have fun and enjoy life.

Ode to environment
We love you environment,
Really you are a true friend,
Your qualities are so special,
And they are commendable.
We got a precious gift from God
From the day we were born,
Yes, it’s you and it’s obvious,
We live on earth because of you
Dear environment,
Through many obstacles we meet
You treat us kindly,
The trees, rivers, streams and many more can be seen here and there,
Though pearly letters written for you,
Your qualities are immeasurable,
With your blessings and
with your helping hand,
We live successfully.
Sometimes you are rough,
We think it’s our fault,
We’ll not blame and we’ll never destroy.
We think we can live and work together.
We love you environment...

Our mother
Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky,
Hundreds of shells on the shore together,

Hundreds of birds in the sunny weather.
Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,
Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,
Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn,
But only one mother the wide world over.

The earth
The
earth is our home. There is air, water and sunlight on the earth. These
are very essential for human beings to live. The earth has forests,
mountains, deserts, plains and rivers. The earth's air is a mixture of
gases. We must keep our earth clean. We depend on the earth's natural
resources.
Humans pollute the earth. Vehicle fumes, factory waste, noise and
garbage have polluted the earth.
We must protect the earth as it is our home.
