SOS Oncology treatment

A grade-13 science student of Ananda College, Colombo 10, Navodya Neomal Hapuarachchi is suffering from "Hodgkin's Lymphoma Cancer" and has been recommended transplant surgery which could be performed at Vellore Hospital, in Tamil Nadu, India, according to Dr. Dehan Gunasekara Oncologist of the National Cancer Institute, Maharagama.

His parents appeal for financial assistance from the public for the surgery. Contributions could be credited to A/c No. 0600 09090720-101 - Seylan bank, Ganemulla, or A/c 74932107 - Bank of Ceylon, Kadawatha. Contact 033-2260736/ 072-3890875 for details.

 

 

Matara Church feast

The annual feast of the Church of Our Lady of Matara will begin on August 29 with the hoisting of the flags.

Arrangements have been made by Rev Damian Arsakularatna, Administrator of the Church to hold the festival on a grand scale with the annual procession and special religious services.


Facelift for Madhu Church Hospital

Work on the Maruda Madhu Hospital restoration commenced on Friday to mark the 60th birthday of the late Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena. Wheel-chairs, pairs of spectacles and school stationery for children of low-income families were distributed. Bishop of Mannar, the Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph officiated at the Holy Mass on Friday in memory of Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena at the Madhu Shrine. Dr. Jayawardena's son Dr. Kavinda Jayawardena leads the Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena Memorial Foundation.


Death of former IGP

Former IGP, Earnest Perera passed away on Friday. Born on November 11, 1932, Perera had his education at St.Joseph's College, Colombo 10.

A graduate of the University of Peradeniya, he joined the Sri Lanka Police Force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. He was appointed DIG and later, Inspector General of Police in 1988. A ruggerite, he did his best to promote rugger in the Police Department. Perera was Sri Lanka High Commissioner in Malaysia from 1994 to 1995.

He leaves his wife Enid Perera and three daughters. His remains lie at AF Raymonds funeral parlour. The funeral takes place with full police honours today at the Borella General Cemetary.
