Thisuri – girls under-18 champion:
Anish clinches boys under-16 title

Anish Wijesinghe emerged the boys Under-16 National Champion and
Thisuri Molligoda clinched the girls Under-18 championship in the 98th
National Tennis Championship worked off at the Sri Lanka Tennis
Association courts, Colombo 7 yesterday.

Anish Wijesinghe in action during the Boys Under-16 finals
at the 98th Sri Lanka National Tennis Championship worked
off at the SLTA courts, Colombo 7 yesterday. Wijesinghe beat
the Junior Davis Cup player and second seed Chean Fernando
by 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. |
In the boys under-16 finals, the United States-based Sri Lanka tennis
player Wijesinghe created a major upset beating the second seed Chean
Fernando, the junior Davis Cup player, who was thrashed by 2-1.
Fernando of St Peter’s College, Colombo was stunned by Wijesinghe,
the bottom-seeded tennis player, who returned to the island recently.
The first set was easily grabbed by Fernando as the Peterite tennis
player won the set 3-6.
Wijesinghe, who outplayed the top seed B Suren by 6-4, 6-0 in the
semi-finals on Friday, bounced back to grab the second and third sets by
6-2, 6-4 respectively.
Thisuri Molligoda won the girls under-18 championship after a heated
three sets 2-1. Molligoda, who beat Kavindya de Silva in the semi-finals
on Friday, defeated Hasindi Lokuge. The match was a thrilling battle
between two players from Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.
Lokuge won the first set 5-7 and Molligoda clinched the finals by
winning in style the second and third sets 6-2 and 7-5.
Three finals to be played today at the SLTA courts commencing at 9am.
Girls and Boys Under-10, Boys Under-12 and Under-14 will start at 10am.

Boys Under-16: Anish Wijesinghe beat Chean Fernando by 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Girls Under 18: Thisuri Molligoda beat Hasindi Lokuge 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
