One of the greatest finishes in Test cricket ...:
West Indies power its way to thrilling four-wicket win over India
By A. C. De Silva
There was the Test match between the West Indies and India in
Kingston, Jamaica played from February 23, 24, 26, 27 and 28 in 1983
where the West Indies won by four wickets.
The experts say that this Test will go down in history as one of the
greatest finishes in a Test match. Here the West Indies powered its way
through.
After three days of absorbing cricket, followed by the loss of the
fourth day due to rain, and then the first hour on the final day, the
Test appeared dying on its feet before Andy Roberts and then Vivian
Richards turned on their magic to make the match a lasting monument to
the vagaries of the game and the power of West Indies cricket.
It was an unforgettable experience, the kind of which will force
those present to boastfully utter, years to come when the dead is being
discussed, “I was there”. India, 167 for 6 wickets at tea, 164 runs on,
appeared out of trouble when suddenly Andy Roberts blasted out the
remaining batsmen with three wickets in his first over after the
interval, then one more for one run off 3.3 overs.
Even then India appeared safe with the home team’s target a
challenging 172 runs in 30 minutes plus the compulsory 20 overs in the
last hour. But then came Richards with a devastating display of 61 runs
off 36 balls with four sixes and five fours to hand the West Indies
victory with three balls to spare in the most exiciting Test match
played at Sabine Park.
