UPFA will win polls in Kilinochchi

Geethanjali Nagularajah

The Kilinochchi district UPFA chief candidate to the Provincial Council elections Geethanjali Nagularajah who is also the SLFP chief organiser for the district expressed optimism that the UPFA will win the PC polls in the district. The TNA is aware that although they may be able to win in the Jaffna district, they will not win the Kilinochchi district. Consequently they are now on a sinister move to character assassinate her, she told the Sunday Observer. She is also getting death threats and other forms of intimidations, she said.

Geethanjali, a university lecturer by profession said she is a widow who had lost not only her husband to the LTTE- induced war on terrorism but also many of her loved ones. She lives a modest chaste life within the traditions of her society but the TNA which is now certain of its defeat in the district is trying to take recourse to measures unbecoming of a decent political party, she said.

As a woman working for the welfare of families affected in the war on terrorism , she has been successful in her election meetings and campaigns in convincing the people that supporting the Government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the best option for peace, prosperity and communal amity and that an opportunistic political party in the calibre of the TNA will only lead them in the path of destruction and doom. There is a large number of widows who had lost their husbands and their loved ones to terrorism, and a large number of affected families. She has explained to President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the party hierarchy the measures that need to be taken to provide relief to the families for their socio-economic uplift, she said.

Many employment-oriented development programs have already been started in the district, including the re-started Paranthan Chemical factory and a garment factory which provides employment to over 1,000 people, she said.

President Rajapaksa is the only leader in the world who had given amnesty to over 17,000 surrendered combatants, rehabilitated them and helped them to merge in society. The TNA, on the other hand, is attempting to make the people wail endlessly by reminding them of all bye-gone tragedies. The people want to live in peace and harmony and the Government is taking steps towards that, she said.
