More Tamil-speaking police officers for N-E

The Police Department has deployed thousands of Tamil-speaking officers to the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said 900 Tamil police officers and 1,500 Sinhala police officers fluent in Tamil have been deployed to police stations in these two provinces.

He said Tamil-speaking citizens in the North and the East could now have their statements recorded in Tamil. The Police Department has taken measures to deploy more Tamil-speaking police officers to these areas to avoid mis-communication and delays in carrying out services to the public due to any language barriers.

The Police Spokesman said the Northern Province has 53 police stations with bilingual police officers while the East has this facility in areas dominated by a Tamil-speaking majority.
