India beat Australia by 59 runs in Melbourne!
By A.C. De Silva
FLASHBACK: India has something to figure about in their clashes
against Australia in the early 1980s. It was Melbourne and one never
thought that India would be able to pull off this match, after Australia
had made 419 in their first innings and India 237 in their first turn
when they batted first.

Alan Border made a fine knock of 124 in the Australia’s
first innings score of 419. |
India kept improving in their batting. G.R. Visvanath made a solid
114 in the first innings for India to make somewhat of a comfortable
first innings total of 237.
But Australia did well when it was their turn and they piled up 419
runs in their first innings with the star batsmen – Alan Border making
124 and together with Greg Chappell who made 76, Walters 78, Marsh 45
the Aussies kept on piling on the runs.
However, the Aussies first innings score was something like a flash
in the pan and the Indian batsmen made a determined effort to pile on
the runs in their second turn and their top order batsmen did not
disappoint with Sunil Gavaskar (70) Chatan Chauhan (85) engaged in a
glorious opening partnership of 165 runs that paved the way for them to
force themselves to be in with a chance.
The Indian openers played solidly in the second innings to make the
Aussies think hard as to what the outcome of the match will finally
be.So, with openers Gavaskar and Chauhan will away with the run-making
the Indians were able to pile up 324 runs in their second innings and
they had a total of 567, but that was not enough as the Australia had
made 419 runs in their first innings. So, Australia had to make 143 runs
to clinch victory. In normal circumstances, the target that the Aussies
had to make looked simple.
However, the glorious uncertainties of cricket prevailed in the end
and the Australia stumped in their second innings and they were shot out
for just 83 runs in their second turn, a collapse that no one expected.
So, finally the Indian had climbed the ladder of success with their
paceman Kapil Dev in rip-roaring form and grabbing 5 for 28 and being
the chief wrecker of the Australian team in what out to be a historic
match for the Indian team.

Dennis Lillee- Reached top form and bowled well in both
innings. He took 4 for 65 in the first innings of India who
were all out 237 and then in the second innings he took 4
for 104 in India’s score of 324. |

Greg Chappel made 76 in Australia’s first innings score of 419.
|

Kapil Dev – Came into top form with the ball in Australia’s
second innings and made a match-winning effort taking 5 for
28 and Australia were shot out for 83 in their second
innings and this effort took the Indians to victory. |

C.P.S. Chauhan – Scored an elegant 85 in India’s second
innings total of 324 after being out without scoring in the
first innings. |

Len Pascoe took 3 for 29 in India’s first innings score of
237 and had 2 for 80 in India’s second innings score of 324.
|

Sunil Gavaskar – Made a elegant knock of 70 runs in India’s
second innings total of 324 against Australia.
