The West Indies too great for England

The man of the match in action .... Larry Gomes who made the top score of 104 not out for the West Indies drives one past England’s chief wicket-taker Allott. With the help of Gomes’ century West Indies made 302 in the first innings of the match they eventually won by eight wickets.

Copy-book catch a first slip: West Indian slip fielder Clive Lloyd takes the catch at slip to dismiss England’s No. 2 batsman Broad for 32 off Riger Harper’s bowling in the England first innings total of 270.

Windies out for the kill...... The West Indies set themselves for the ‘kill’ with another superb victory over England at Leeds in the match they won by eight wickets in the match played on July 12, 13, 14 and 15th 1984. This Test played at Headingly was intriguing. On the first three days the famous old Yorkshire ground was full as never before and the takings were 250,000 which was a record then. The England captain David Gower was not able to do anything of note, getting 2 in the first innings and 43 in the second as the West Indies ran circles around them.

England who batted first, were out for 270 and this was greatly due to the fine batting by Allan Lamb who made 100. For much of the first two days, England looked to be heading for a first innings lead. The top of the order was taken out by the new ball, Fowler and the new player Paul Terry failing. But Allan Lamb stayed on a wicket of increasing problems-height of bounce mainly and by counter attacking with good judgement Lamb played his way to a second consecutive century, something of a of a bonus against the Windies attack.

The wicket spins in the air and England’s Paul Allott doesn’t seem to know how Holding – the West Indian paceman got his wicket for 3 runs in England’s first innings. This wicket marked Holding’s 200th wicket Tests.

Lamb had Botham with him and England looked to be heading for a score of over 300, which obviously seemed to be a winning score. However, England’s tail ceased to wag and Downton too failed to make a big score.

So, England seemed to be somewhat sorry as the fine century by Lamb came to nothing. England were all out for 270.

But this was not enough and England found that it just would not topple the admirable Larry Gomes who has been as solid as the rock of Gibraltar on the tour. Larry Gomes kept pushing up to the ball and knocking it on either side of the bowler depending on the gap in the field. On a wicket of unpredictable bounce this was the obvious and indeed the only way to play.

The decisive stand for the West Indies was that between Gomes and Holding when England thought the Windies hatch was open. Holding made 59 in 55 balls.

He had batted well enough at Edgbaston. Now he hit Willis all over, hitting no fewer then five sixes off the old warhorse, who not long ago was steaming down the same hill as he destroyed Australia. The West Indies finally went past the England total by 32 runs and then it was England’s turn to bat again in the second innings. It was only Fowler and Gower who made runs to their liking and England’s second turn ended at 159 all out which gave them only a lead of 127 runs. Besides their somewhat poor batting all round, they dropped catches in the final stages but nothing could have stopped the West Indies. The target was almost insignificant with hindsight, it could be said that the combination of Gomes and Marshall was more lethal than that of Lamb and Allott.

West Indies ace paceman Malcolm Marshall who took 7 for 53 in the England 2nd Innings score of 159 seems to be happy with his best haul in Test cricket then.

England’s Allan Lamb forces West Indian bowler Baptiste to the fence during his fine innings of 100 in the England total of 270 in the third Test against West Indies at Leeds. Besides the first innings. West Indies made 302 in the first innings and 131 for 2 wickets to win the match by eight wickets.

England’s opening batsman Graeme Fowler is trapped leg before wicket by West Indies paceman Joel Garner for 10 in England’s first innings score of 270 in the Test at Leeds.

West Indian batsman Desmond Haynes gets a lucky four off England’s Pringle past the leaping wicket-keeper Downton. Haynes made 18 in the first innings and 43 in the second innings.
