Chief Ministers call for PC dissolution

The Chief Ministers of Southern and Western Provincial Councils yesterday wrote to their Governors to dissolve the provincical councils.

According to the P rovincial Council Elections Act when such a request is made, the Governors are required to dissolve the Councils immediately.

Southern PC Chief Minsiter Shan Wijayalal de Silva wrote to Governor Kumari Balasooriya and the Western Province Chief Minister PRasanna Ranatunga to Alavi Moulana making the requests yesterday.

It is expected that elections in the two provinces will be held by April.

A spokesperson for the Elections Secretariat said once the gazette notification on the dissolution of the PCs is issued, the Elections Department will fix the dates for nominations.
