Kandy SC in 34-13 win over Up Country Lions
By Hafiz Marikar
Kandy Sports Club, who were Eighteen times league champions continued
to walk the local rugby world like a colossus. Last evening they beat
host Up-Country Lions Ruby Club at Jayatilake Stadium Nawalapitiya by 34
points ( Four Conversations and two Penalties ) To 13 points ( one
Conversations and two Penalties )
Though the game was scrappy in the first quarter of the game, Roshan
Weerarthne's Kandyans were stronger in every aspect of play, and were
the first to score through Anurudha Wilwara few minutes later "Lions
scored through Kanchana Ramanayake both tries wee goaled, to make it 7
all in the first fifteen minutes of the game
The winners, who did little bit of mistakes is the first twenty
minutes, won major shares in the every thing in game.
Their eight played a fine, bit of rugby, where hey handled the ball
well and also tackled fiercely on several occasions to halt the
Nawalapitiya men from scoring.
This encounter provided, some superb rugby, where most of the time
the ball was handled by the threes quarters, and there was less aim less
kicking, rugby union is a game played by two teams which physically
contest for the ball, within the laws of the game and in the spirit of
fair play, for which the referee should make the game alive and kicking
with balance blowing
Kandy Sports Club flashed out a brand of play, not seen at this
venue, they were fast and ever ready to fling the ball about, the Kandy
players showed a marked superiority over the Nawalapitiya lads in every
move they initiated.
They used their superior weight and binding much tighter and lower,
had the ball back far more often. It was heartening sight to see had and
low tackling, which is used by the defending team to stop the attacking
team moving forward. They handled the ball clean and showed how rugby
should be and can be played.
Make no mistake, the score is no indication of the great effort by
the winners, who had the ball in the half for the major part of the
play. It was their forwards who won them good ball yesterday. They were
outstanding in the loose play, getting behind the ball fast and tackling
well. Their bustling game completely upset the "Lions" who failed to
match the winners, manly in the second half.
The Kandy Sports Club XV is undoubtedly a good side this season, I am
certain in the second round Kandy Sports Club will be even better . On
the run of play Nittawela boys certainly deserved to win. They did every
thing a little better than their opponents. The liaison between outsides
and forwards admirable.
I say that at no stage of the game, did Up-Country "Lions" look the
slightest bit dangerous in the second half, in the first half they were
little bit tuff, . Frankly I think it was a case of "stage fright: which
effect even their best men. The started to loose the match at forward,
their players failed to give what they give normally, they forgot the
maxim "Attack" is the best from defence.
At the end of the first half, the scored board read 10 each, Anurudha
Wilwara score the try for the Kandy side, which was goaled by Roshan
Weerathen he also knocked a penalty at goal, and for the "Lions"
Kanchana Ramanayake scored the try and Nigel Rawtatte goaled the try and
put over the penalty.
In the second half, half Anurudha Wilwera scored his second try, then
came the try from Lavanga Perera, then came the last try of the game
from Samisoni Fiffta Loloka All the tires were converted by Roshan
Weeraratne , also goaled the second penalty.
For "Lions" in the second half Nigel Rawtatte pout over a penalty.
So ended what be called a good game of rugby, so the better team of
the evening went home as winners.
Dimthri Gunaratne refereed.
