Home team Windies win in a canter over India

Frank Worrell

M. Jaisimha

Chandu Borde

CRICKET: The second Test match between West Indies and India at Sabina Park, Kingston in March 1962, ended in a easy win for the West Indies by an innings and 18 runs.

Though West Indies won in a canter with more than a day to spare, not even Worrell was convinced that the Indians were as bad an figures showed against fast bowling - what happened is that most of the Indian batsman gave away their hands in the game, playing awfully naughty shots.

This was borne out when the West Indians emitted Watson from the team for the second Test and when India won the toss and most people expected to see some more disciplined batting. But no, the Indians throw away the advantage of the toss, losing the top players of their batting on an amiable pitch for less than 100 runs. It looked then, as if the bottom was knocked out of India.

Some of the critics hailed India's 395 when they batted first with Borde making 93, Nadkarni 78 not out, Umrigar 50, Engineer 53.

Polly Umrigar

Now the Sabina Park pitch was so well behaved, even Hall had to bring out the best in order to beat the batsman. He produced one which completely beat Contractor at the start of the Indian innings and got him out for one.

Then Border seemed to settle down, Wesley Hall blew a hole right through his defence to bowl him comprehensively and Border departed with his score at 93. India finally got out for 395.

On such a pitch rewards could come only to those who were prepared to toil with conscientious persistently. And the man who rose to the occasion was Garfield Sobers. The slope-shoulders left-hander tossed, turned though slowly but teased and varied his pace to beat the batsmen and he took four wickets for 75 and had the Indians cornered.

Then came the West Indians to bat and though the Windies lost the early wicket of Hunte for 9 with the total at 16m the West Indies second wicket pair of Eastern McMorris (125) and Rohan Kanhai (138) proceeded to wear out the Indian bowlers and add to it - Garfield Sobers (153)m Frank Worrell (58)m Medonca (78), the West Indies ran up the handsome total of 631 for 8 wickets in their first innings. When the Windies declared their first innings at the handsome total, the game was literally taken away from India.

Came India's second innings and there was Windies ace paceman Wesley Hall to present the problems to the Indian batsman and Hall went on to take 6 for 49 in the second innings and India were all out for 218 in the second innings and supporting him at the other end was Lance Gibbs with 3 for 44 and the West Indies won the match!
