Drug offenders fined Rs. 20 million

Those convicted in drugs and narcotics cases in Maho, Ambanpola and Polpithigama in the Kurunegala district, were fined Rs. 20.5 million in 2013.

Maho ASP H.M.P. Herath said that the fines imposed on convicts from each police area are as follows: Polpithigama Rs. 9,433,030 Maho Rs. 6,165,250 Ambanpola Rs. 6,152,800.

The ASP said that raids to round up drug addicts have been intensified in the Kurunegala district this year and 75 police officers have been deployed to conduct raids and arrest drug users, and those who sell drugs to youngsters in the Kurunegala district. A Senior Zonal Director of Education said that 175 students of leading schools in Kurunegala and Puttalam districts were found to have taken drugs during the past two years and they were rehabilitated by the health authorities.
