Govt to buy b-onions at certified price

The government will purchase local big onions at a certified price, a spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture said.

He said that the import of big onions will be limited as farmers in Hambantota have begun cultivating big onions during the off season. Big onion cultivators in the Central Province harvest the yield from July to October while farmers in Hambantota could harvest by April or June.

Farmers in Ridiyagama, Koggala, Beragama, Ekamuthugama, Julpallama, Kohombagahapelessa and Hungama areas of the Hambantota district have started cultivating big onions during the off season.
