New code of sports guidelines to come into force

The Ministry of Education has issued a special code of guidelines to school heads countrywide with regard to the sportsmeets and sports training programs safely in the future.

Anura Dissanayake, secretary to the Ministry of Education in this code of guidelines to school principals has emphasised that sports teachers, PTIs and coaches should be with their trainees as long as the training sessions are held to ensure the safety of students.

Several unfortunate incidents have been reported from schools while sports events were being held and certain students had undergone serious injuries and a few had faced even deaths due to lack of supervision of sports authorities of schools.

Taking their plight into consideration, school heads and PTIs of schools should be very careful and attentive towards the safety of students. Sports teachers and school principals should be answerable if some unfortunate tragic incidents take place due to the carelessness and negligience on the part of sports teachers. Even reluctantly, the offenders would be dealt with disciplinary punishments to the maximum, the circular has emphasised.
