Richmond awarded victory

Match referee Basil Perera awarded Richmond College a win in the 109th Lovers Quarrel which was disrupted by supporters of Mahinda College at 4.10 pm last evening. Mahinda College following on were trailing by three runs with nine wickets down and almost twelve overs left in the days play when supporters of Mahinda College invaded the field and man handled Thisara

Bhanuka the bowler.

The Principals of the two Colleges are said to have signed a document accepting the decision of the match referee Basil Perera and umpires Ruchira Palliyaguru and Thilak Fernando. The document was prepared on an initiative taken by the Manager and Curator of the Galle International Cricket stadium Jayananda Warnaweera, incidentally an old boy of Mahinda College. It should be noted that the supporters of Mahinda College deprived their team of the opportunity to bat out the remaining overs and force a draw.

Richmond batting first recovered from a disastrous 38/4 to declare their first innings at 257/9 anchored by a captains knock of 137 by A K Tyron.

Mahinda continuing from their over were 81/3 were restricted to 128 runs with A K Tyron excelling with ball as well and capturing six wickets.

The Mahindians asked to follow on fell prey to the spin of Thisara Bhanuka 4/31 and Waruna Deshapriya 3/28 when their supporters invaded the field resulting in the match being awarded to Richmond.

Richmond deprived of a win for the past 45 years would have liked to claim it by bowling out the Mahindians rather than being awarded the match.
