England win ‘Ashes’ by 4 games to one


Stan McCabe – It’s one of the quirks of cricket history a bowling feat by a batting maestro that will never be beaten. 187 out of 360 in First Test at Sydney.



 


Harald Larwood – Among the wickets for England 5 for 96 and 5 for 28 in Sydney Test, 4 for 101 and 3 for 49 in 4th Test at Brisbane, then 4 for 98 in first innings of Fifth Test at Sydney. He also made 98 in England’s 2nd innings total of 454 in 5th Test which England won by 8 wickets.

A cricket team representing England toured Australia in the 1932-33 season. The tour was organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club and matches outside the Tests were played under the MCC name.

The tour included five Test matches in Australia, and England won The Ashes by four games to one.

The tour was highly controversial because of the Bodyline bowling tactics used by the England team under the captaincy of Douglas Jardine.

The ‘Bodyline’ series


Sir Donald Bradman – made 103 not out in second innings out of 191 in Australia second innings of Second Test, 66 in 2nd Innings of third Test at Adelaide, 71 in the second innings of 2nd innings total of 182 in fifth Test at Sydney.

The ‘bodyline’ series was played in 1932-33.

First Test at Sydney: Australia 360 (S.McCabe 187). V.Y. Richardson 49, H. Larwood five for 96, B. Voce four for 110) and 164 (J.H. Fingleton 40, Larwood five for 28) lost to England 524 (H. Sutcliffe 194, W.R. Hammond 112, Nawab of Pataudi (Sr.) 102, Wall three for 104, O’Reilley three for 117) and one for no loss.

Second Test at Melbourne: Australia 228 (Fingleton 83, Voce three for 54) and 191 (Bradman 103 not out, Hammond three for 21) beat England 169 (Sutcliffe 52, Wall four for 52, O’Reilley five for 63) and 139 (O’Reilley five for 66, M. Ironmonger four for 26).

Third Test at Adelaide: England 341 (M. Leyland 83, R.E.S. Wyatt 78, E. Paynter 77, H. Verity 45, Wall five for 72) and 412 (Jardine 56, Hammond 85, Ames 69, Leyland 42, Wyatt 49, Verity 40, O’Reilley four for 79, Ironmonger (three for 87) beat Australia 222 (Ponsford 85, Allen four for 71) and 193 (Woodfull 73, not out, Bradman 66).

Fourth Test at Brisbane: Australia 340 (V.Y. Richardson 83, Woodfull 67, Bradman 76, Larwood four for 101) and 175 (Larwood three for 49, Allen three for 44) drew with England 356 (Jardine 446, Sutcliffe 86, E. Paynter 83, O’Reilley four for 120, Ironmonger three for 69) and 162 for four (Leyland 86).

Fifth Test at Sydney: Australia 435 (Bradman 48, O’Brien 61, McCabe 73, L.S. Darling 85, Oldfield 52, P.K. Lee 42, Larwood four for 98, Verity three for 62) and 182 (Woodfull 67, Bradman 71, Verity five for 33). England 454 (Sutcliffe 56. Hammond 101, Larwood 98, Leyland 42, Wyatt 51, G.O. Allen 48, O’Reilley three for 100) and 168 for two (Hammond 75 not out, Wyatt 61 not out). England win by 8 wickets.
