EU impressed with Lanka's economic growth

The European Union (EU) is impressed with the economic progress Sri Lanka has made after 2009. However, there is a need for reforms and addressing key issues to increase trade relations with the EU, EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, David Daly told a group of businessmen in Colombo last week.

Unemployment rate falls to 4.1 percent

According to latest data of the Sri Lanka labour force survey of the Department of Census and Statistics, the unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013. Unemployment rate continually declined from 5.9 percent in 2009 and it was 4.6 percent in the first quarter of 2013 and 4.4 in the second and third quarters of the year.

Asian Development Outlook 2014 (ADO 2014), the flagship annual economic publication from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) released last week forecasts 7.5 percent economic growth in Sri Lanka in 2014 and expects it to remain at that level in 2015.

Over 80% of children are unpaid family workers

Children engaged in economic activities are considered as child labourers but in our rural culture, children usually help household economic activities. According to the Child Activity Survey - 2009 conducted by the Department of Census and Statistics, total Child Labour in Sri Lanka was estimated at 107,259 or 2.5 % of the total child population.
