Historic triumph for Kiwis over England

FLASHBACK: A memorable win: Practice hard and success will surely come your way - that is a famous saying and it was so, as New Zealand after 52 long years of trying, was their first Test match in England at the 29th attempt when they beat England by five wickets in their second Test at Headingley.

Bruce Edgar made 84 in opening the batting for New Zealand in the Headingley Test against England and helped them to make 377 in the first innings.

John Wright – good opening batsman made 93 batting at No. 1 in the first innings for New Zealand against England.

In the first innings England's collapse came about when Kiwi bowler Lance Cairns, the 33-year-old allrounder from New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, found Headingley just as bountiful a place on the opening day. Cairns took 7 for 74 as England crashed to 225 all out after being put in to bat.

It was the best performance over by a New Zealand bowler against England and it came from a man who was close to being dropped from the side.

For Cairns revealed afterwards that skipper Geoff Howarth had "politely" told him to pull uphis ........ in their last match, against Warwickshire.

Cairns responded with those seven wickets for 46 runs to simply destroy England to give him the greatest moment of his 30-Test career.

"The captain told me was a bit worried about my bowling and that fair enough," said the 14-stone Cairns, who is better known for his big hitting.

After England were all out for 225 with two batsmen - Chris Tavare- the opening batsman making the top score of 69 and A.J. Lamb 58 and Ian Botham got 38. Kiwi frontline batsman J.G. Wright (93) and B.A. Edgar (84) gave a real push start for the Kiwis and later Richard Hadlee hit 75 while M.D. Growe made 37 and the New Zealanders made the healthy reply of 377 runs in their first innings. So, the Kiwis had a first innings lead of 152 runs.

Of the England bowlers, Willis who opened the attack took 4 for 57 and Cowans took 3 for 88.

Came the second innings and David Gower made merry with the bat and he made 112 not out in the second innings and helped England no to make 252 in their second innings, there was of course Cairns who in the first innings grabbed 7 for 74 in England's first innings and then it was left for Chatfield to do the damage in the second innings where he grabbed a haul of five wickets for 95 runs and Lance Cairns took 3 for 70 and England were all out for 252 runs in the second innings.

The stage was then set for New Zealand to make 101 runs in their second innings for victory and they reached 103 runs for five wickets to win the match by 5 wickets.

Kiwi Lamce Cairns was named the 'Man of the Match' for his overall figures of 10 for 144 runs.

Richard Hadlee – the famed New Zealand pace bowler couldn’t do anything with the ball, but he made a fine knock of 75 in the New Zealand first innings total of 377 and helped them in their victory march.

Allan Lamb made 58 for England and helped them to make 225 in their first innings.

On the go ....New Zealand pace bowler E.J. Chatfield was among the wickets in the England second innings and had a haul of 5 for 95 in the England second innings which pushed the New Zealand era to victory England were all out for 252 in their second turn.

Chris Tavare

At it with great determination – England’s pace bowler Norman Cowans took 3 for 88 in the New Zealand first innings score of 377.

David Gower made 112 not out in the second innings helped England to make 252 in their second innings total and calm the New Zealand bowlers down.
