Cyclone destroys 120 houses in Anuradhapura

A heavy storm accompanied torrential rains in the Anuradhapura district caused severe damage to 120 houses in the district.

Anuradhapura Government Agent Mahinda Seneviratne told the Sunday Observer that the stormy conditions have been prevailing in the Galenbindunawewa, Kahatagasdigiliya, Horowpothana, Nochchiyagama, Thirappane, Mihintale and Mahawilachchiya DS divsions since April 5.

"It was reported that 30 houses in Mihintale and two houses in Thirappane were badly demaged due to gale force winds", Seneviratne said. He said the District Disaster Management Officers, Divisional Secretaries and the Grama Niladaries have been instructed to continue relief operations for the affected families.

"They are being provided with cooked meals and food rations. Officials are also assessing the total damage caused to properties", Seneviratne added.
