Police probe attack on UNP MPs

A police investigation is underway to determine whether there had been any negligence in duty on the part of the Police or security officers accompanying UNP MPs whose vehicle had come under a rotten egg attack in Hambantota on Thursday.

A group of people had pelted rotten eggs at the vehicle of the UNP MPs returning after a visit to the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Harbour.

No one was injured in the incident. Our correspondents said the angry crowd had claimed the UNP was only trying to sabotage the twin development projects and the visit had not been made with good intentions.

An investigation is underway to determine whether there had been any negligence in duty by officers of the Hambantota police or security officers attached to the MPs and also to find out those responsible for the attack, Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The UNP MPs who visited Hambantota were Ajith P. Perera, R. Yogarajan, Ajith Mannapperuma, Eran Wickremaratne and Nalin Bandara.
